Ava DuVernay (Middle of Nowhere and I Will Follow) has a great way of storytelling that keeps things interesting and real; allowing you to connect with the characters. When I first watched Say Yes, it absolutely made my day. There are so many details about the film that speak to me; the music, the angles, the fashion, and above all the reminiscent feeling it evoked. Say Yes transported me to different moments in my life throughout the film. It was amazing. I reflected on the atmosphere of open mic and poetry nights I used to frequent at the Five Seasons and Eden's Lounge. I remembered the Urban League happy hours and NSBE events I attended. I thought of nights out with my friends listening to live music at Bohemian Caverns and Club 347. I even recalled engagement parties I've attended to celebrate friends and the fun and excitement of seeing familiar faces and meeting new people. Simply put, this film brought back memories and made me smile.
